What is Sub-Ohm vaping? | THREE Types of Sub-Ohm Atomizers

Sub-ohm Vaping is simply Vaping at a Resistance less than 1 ohm.


The attraction to sub-ohm vaping came about because vapers desire more flavor and vapor from their atomizers. When atomizers like cartomizers were not able to keep up with the wicking needed for the lower resistances, atomizers like Rebuildable Tanks (Kayfun) and Rebuildable Dripping Atomizers (RDA,s) came about. In the beginning, vapers were still building above 1 ohm and then people started to push the limits of what their atomizers and devices could handle. By the time more was understood about sub-ohm vaping and rebuilding atomizers, vapers wanted a way to get the satisfaction of sub-ohm vaping without the need to rebuild; along came the Sub-ohm Tank. These atomizers were the answer for vapers who did not want to rebuild but needed the satisfaction of sub-ohm vaping. Each of these three types of sub-ohm vaping devices are still very popular today and there are pros and cons to each of them. Many vapers do not stray too far from their preferred type of sub-ohm device  once they find it.

 

A QUICK NOTE ON REBUILDING:

Rebuilding is when you use wire to wrap your own coils and install them into your rebuildable atomizer by connecting leads into positive and negative post holes. Rebuildable atomizers are atomizers that have a build deck that allows you to install your own coils rather than just the stock manufacturer coils which typically screw directly into a socket in the atomizer. When learning to rebuild, it is very important to have an ohm reader to check the resistance of your build to insure you are within safety limits of your battery.


 

THREE Types of Sub-ohm Atomizers

Rebuildable Dripping Atomizers (RDA) are Atomizers meant for use with  high-powered mechanical or regulated devices. The reason these are referred to as rebuildable dripping atomizers is because in order to keep the wicking saturated you must regularly drip e-juice onto the build in order to continue vaping.


Rebuilding RDA,s is not as scary as it may seem and out of all of the rebuildable sub-ohm options, rebuilding an RDA is by far the easiest. Getting coils on each side of the deck glowing evenly from the inside out might be a little bit of a challenge at first, but once the basics are understood about building most vapers have no issues.


There are many vapers who are very passionate about dripping and a big reason for this is the physical action of dripping on to the coils. It is a very repetitive action (comparable to when we were smokers and went to light a cigarette). This repetitive action for some vapers who use RDA,s is a huge part of how they remain tobacco free.

RTA (Rebuildable Tank Atomizers), just like an RDA, involves rebuilding your own coils to be installed onto a deck with positive and negative posts. The difference is that with an RTA you will be filling a tank that eliminates having to continually drip e-juice to keep your wicking saturated.

Rebuilding an RTA can be a lot more difficult than rebuilding an RDA because there are a lot more parts to keep track of, along with variables that can affect your vaping experience. For instance, let's say you are just learning how to rebuild your new RTA, and you get your coil installed, wicked, and then fill your tank; then you go to vape on it and it tastes burnt, even though it is a brand new build. Well something probably went wrong while you were building, so you will have to empty your juice, take the whole tank apart and rebuild it again.


It can be a learning experience using RTA,s, but most people who figure out how to build them grow to love being able to rebuild their own coils while still using a tank system, and proficient RTA builders can get excellent flavor from their devices.

Sub-ohm Tanks have become the future of vaping. When sub-ohm tanks were released, the market definitely shifted. These types of tanks created a way for vapers who wanted the vapor quality of a sub-ohm device without the hassle of rebuilding.

When using a sub-ohm tank you are able to just buy stock coils, just like you would have with a basic starter kit, but the vapor quality is significantly better. If you happen to dry hit your coil (which won,t happen on temp-control devices, but that,s another story), it's okay, you can just unscrew the bottom, throw the old coil away, and replace it with a new one. Super easy!


Even though sub-ohm tanks are a lot easier than an RDA and RTA, basic battery safety is still very important to take into account. You should never use a sub-ohm tank on a hybrid mechanical mod, and must understand the amperage limit of your battery.
